Eighteen students, ages 12-14, were introduced to manufacturing careers and technology at the week-long Machining U 2007 camp at Jackson Area Career Center. In hands-on projects, campers fabricated a wrought iron end table, machined simple pliers, and created a horseshoe coat hook. They also machined Machining U key chains to take home, milled a nut and bolt from aluminum on a CNC mill and engraved the nuts with their names. Campers toured the facilities of Technique Inc. and Miller Tool & Die and got a feel for the manufacturing environment.
“R.M. sent a letter of application to a local manufacturer following a facility tour, where the co-owner offered a position to any student wanting to work for the company. I know this camp provided R.M. with a life-changing experience. In addition, we’ve heard comments from students that they definitely want to participate in the program next year. One parent remarked that this was the best experience their son ever had.” |
